Psychology says people who give up without a fight easily aren't always weak. A person may stop arguing, leave a relationship, quit an effort or refuse to explain themselves after repeated experiences of stress and disappointment. This behaviour can be linked to emotional exhaustion, learned helplessness and self-preservation. Some people may have spent time trying to change a situation before deciding that continuing would cost more than it could provide. Others may withdraw because previous conflicts brought anger, rejection or emotional pain. Psychology suggests that giving up can sometimes be a response to what a person has already experienced rather than a sign that they do not care.
