Psychology says people who bring food to every house party may be doing more than being polite

There is always that person who refuses to arrive at a house party empty-handed. Someone else may simply walk through the door and say hello, but this person arrives carrying a box of sweets, a bag of chips, homemade dessert or something they insist everyone should try. They may even ask the host beforehand, “Should I bring anything?”

Psychology suggests that this seemingly ordinary habit can reveal interesting things about prosocial behaviour, social norms, reciprocity, attachment and the way people create social bonds. But it does not necessarily mean the person is a people-pleaser. Sometimes, bringing food is simply their preferred way of showing care.
