For some young adults, deciding to move in with friends sounds exciting right up until they imagine telling their parents. They may have already worked out the rent, chosen roommates and pictured what their new life will look like. Yet the sentence, “I want to move out,” feels almost impossible to say.
Psychology suggests that this hesitation isn't necessarily a sign that someone is immature or unprepared for independence. In some families, leaving home carries emotional meanings that go far beyond changing an address. It can activate guilt, fear of disappointing parents, worries about damaging the relationship and an uncomfortable question: Can I choose a life for myself without making the people I love feel rejected?
