There is probably something in your wardrobe that you haven't worn in years but still cannot bring yourself to throw away. It may be an old college T-shirt, a dress you wore to an important event, jeans from a different phase of your life or a jacket that no longer fits but somehow feels impossible to discard. You may even know you are unlikely to wear it again. Yet every time you consider giving it away, something makes you hesitate.
Psychology suggests that this behaviour is not always about being disorganised or wasteful. Clothes can become connected to identity, memories, emotions and a sense of personal history, making them psychologically different from ordinary objects.
