The huge Eredivisie fixture between PSV and Ajax had to be suspended after Steven Berghuis was targeted by a projectile thrown from the stands.
The Dutch giants went toe to toe in Eindhoven as both looked to make up some much-needed ground on runaway leaders Feyenoord. Effectively they're jostling for second place and the Euro boost that comes with it and that meant tensions were flaring even more than usual in one of the biggest games on the Eredivisie calendar.
Fan behaviour has been a hot topic in the Netherlands after Feyenoord's Davy Klaasen was left bleeding from the head after being hit by a missile from the stands. And after rival fans were seen clashing outside the stadium before the game, it was another unsavoury incident that saw the PSV vs Ajax showdown halted temporarily with the home side leading 2-0. An object, appearing to be a glass bottle, was thrown towards Berghuis which led to the players confronting fans near the area it was thrown from.
The referee then pulled both sets of players off the pitch, as seen in a video shared by Video Eredivisie on Twitter. Authorities then attempted to identify the fan responsible and eject them from the stadium as a scuffle broke out in the stands. The stoppage was announced over the stadium tannoy with fans warned that any recurrence of the incident would lead to the game being suspended permanently and play soon resumed.
