PS5 Tiny: Fan makes console even slimmer than the PS5 Slim

The PS5 Slim only just landed overseas, but a gifted tinkerer has already created a much smaller version of Sony’s console.

Half as tall as the original PS5 and roughly 60 percent smaller, the tiny PS5 looks more like a mini PC or a hefty internet router. That means you can easily fit it into a backpack to take to your mates, and it can slot into your TV cabinet with ease.

As spotted by tech site Sweclockers, the petite device comes from the YouTube channel Not from Concentrate (NFC), which has a knack for miniaturising gaming PCs. While this isn’t the first time someone has tried to create a smaller PS5, it’s arguably the best-modified version of the console yet.

What’s more, the tiny device comes with a detachable, vertical stand that can charge a DualSense controller. Inevitably at this size, some cutbacks had to be made: the console has an external disc drive compared to a detachable one on the PS5 Slim.

If the sight of the sleek device has awoken your inner modder, don’t go taking apart your PS5 just yet. In reality, recreating the tiny console will be nigh on impossible for most general hobbyists. NFC created the tiny PS5 from more than 20 custom parts built using 3D printers, laser cutting machines and other large, automated machinery.

It also required a new power supply unit and heatsink and fan setup that together cost almost as much as a PS5 digital console. Although the components were pricey, they were crucial in reducing the device’s overall size so that it could be stuffed inside a mini PC shell.

The separate disc drive required yet more electronics handiwork to get it up and running efficiently. Considering the changes that were made, it's surprising to hear that the PS5 Tiny was only a couple of degrees hotter when gaming.

Seeing as powerful consoles like the PS5 are costly to make, it’s unlikely that Sony could have produced something similar for the same price as its £480 PS5 Slim. For now, we can all marvel at the tiny wonder and dream of the day that all next-gen consoles come in smaller packages.
