A Somerset saver has won £1 million with a Premium Bond bought only in July 2026, but the rapid jackpot came from the same random chance given to every eligible £1 Bond.
According to a recent MoneyWeek report, National Savings and Investments (NS&I) named the Somerset holder as one of two jackpot winners in its October 2026 draw. Winning number 681KK770541 formed part of an £11,000 block bought in July, while the saver held £16,000 in Premium Bonds overall.
The timing follows the rules. A bond bought at any point in July sits out August, its required full calendar month, before entering the September draw. It remains eligible in October if the saver keeps it.
Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment (ERNIE), NS&I's random-number generator, selects the winners, according to the savings bank's webpage dedicated to the matter. Every eligible £1 bond has an equal chance, regardless of its age, although holding more bonds supplies more entries.
October's other £1 million winner lives in East Sussex and has the maximum £50,000 holding. Their winning number, 331QY484133, belonged to a £5,900 block purchased in May 2018. NS&I personally informs both jackpot recipients through its Agent Million service.
October 2026 Draw Distributes £498 Million
NS&I will award 6,546,849 prizes worth exactly £498,378,775 in October. Beyond the two jackpots, 96 winners receive £100,000, 191 get £50,000 and 382 collect £25,000.
The draw also includes 957 prizes of £10,000, 1,914 of £5,000, 19,934 of £1,000 and 59,802 of £500. At the lower levels, NS&I will distribute 2,371,145 prizes apiece at £100 and £50, alongside 1,721,281 awards of £25.
Martin Lewis, a finance expert, said that high-value prize counts have increased since January 2026, when the draw contained 77 prizes of £100,000, 156 of £50,000 and 309 of £25,000, The Independent reported. October therefore offers 19 more £100,000 awards, 35 more £50,000 prizes and 73 additional £25,000 payouts.
Why Most UK Savers Will Not Become Millionaires
The current annual prize fund rate is 4.35 per cent, while the monthly odds are 21,000 to one for each eligible £1 Bond. Those are the odds of any prize, not the £1 million jackpot. The rate funds the overall prize pool; it is not guaranteed interest paid equally to every saver.
An analysis cited by The Independent used the previous 3.8 per cent rate and warned that most holders would receive less than the headline figure, with many winning nothing. NS&I increased the rate to 4.35 per cent and shortened the odds from 22,000 to one from the September draw, but the underlying distinction remains.
Premium Bonds preserve a saver's nominal capital because NS&I is backed by HM Treasury. Prizes are also exempt from UK Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax. However, inflation can reduce the money's purchasing power, while an ordinary savings account pays predictable interest.
Adults with a UK bank account can invest between £25 and £50,000. Premium Bonds can also be bought for children under 16, but they do not provide regular income or guaranteed returns.
How To Check Whether You Won
Full October results become available on 2 October 2026. Savers can enter their holder's number through the NS&I website or use its free prize-checker app, which displays current winnings, results from the previous six draws and older unclaimed prizes.
Amazon Alexa users can enable the Premium Bonds prize-checker skill and ask for their results. For prizes paid automatically, NS&I sends an email or text and normally transfers the money by the seventh working day of the month.
Savers below the £50,000 limit may instead reinvest their winnings, making the new bonds eligible for the following draw. Cheque payments remain available but take longer to arrive.
