Internationally-renowned free surfer Craig Anderson has ended a 13-year chapter in Merewether after selling his long-time home to upgrade closer to the beach.
The South Africa-born, Newcastle-based surfer, who was inducted into the Merewether Surfboard Club's hall of fame in 2024, listed his four-bedroom house at 6 William Street with Mitchel Ross of Christie's International Real Estate NSW.
It held a $1.95 million to $2.05 million price guide.
Cotality records show the two-storey home on a 508-square-metre corner block recently sold for $1.925 million.
The campaign generated strong levels of enquiry, with 60 groups attending the open house inspections, including buyers from Sydney.
The updated home's layout, featuring multiple living areas, a large entertaining deck, a top floor loft with district views, and a self-contained lower level, proved a major drawcard.
"The two groups we had making offers in the end both had kids who are a bit older, so that self-contained area was appealing to them when they had family coming and going," Mr Ross said.
Two buyers competed head-to-head for the property: a Sydney buyer requiring a longer settlement, and a couple from Mayfield who were ready to move fast.
"It was quite a long campaign, and we had offers early on that were a little bit lower but we wanted to wait to find a buyer in the price range," he said.
"In the end, we had two buyers making offers, but the people who bought it were happy for a quick settlement, which suited Craig as well."
Anderson bought the property in 2013 for $770,000.
According to Cotality, the median house value in Merewether is $2.05 million.
Values have climbed 22.2 per cent in the past five years.
While his growing family prompted the move, the surfer hasn't relocated too far away.
He has bought a home closer to the beach in Curry Street, where he lives with his wife Eloise and their five-month-old baby.
The move comes during a busy stretch for Anderson, who successfully pivoted from competition to focus on filming, video parts, and travelling, making him one of the most recognisable and influential free surfers in the world.
His latest surf film, Defect, includes Dane Reynolds, Kaito Ohashi and Matt Hoy.
He is also a co-founder of the clothing brand, Former.
After selling the childhood home of pro surfer Ryan Callinan at auction in April, Mr Ross is set to bring another property to market on Merewether's Ranclaud Street.
The luxury home, which is just 250 metres from Merewether Beach and Dixon Park Beach, includes a nine-car garage.
