Private View at Soho Theatre: 'Like Tom Stoppard doing a dark, queer love play'

If the late Tom Stoppard had written a dark queer love play it might have looked something like this. Jess Edwards has established herself as a great director - her production of Anoushka Lucas’s Elephant was a recent highlight - but her debut play shows that same super-smart, playful spirit in her writing too.

The setup is pretty straightforward, as two (unnamed) women meet at a private view of an art exhibition and quickly begin a relationship. One of them is 23 and doing a PhD in physics focused on how particles react to intention, the other 38 and a wealthy artist who makes works out of light. Sharp sounds and flashes of colour smash us from one quickfire scene to the next in Annie Kershaw’s production: of the couple getting to know each other, falling in love, having intense sex, and their relationship turning into something uncomfortable and uncertain.
