A day after arriving at a Queensland jail, an inmate was allegedly raped in the toilet by accused serial sex offender Raymond Henry Garland, a court has been told.
About a week later, Garland allegedly did it again.
Garland, 52, has been accused by three men of a number of sexual offences while they were inmates at Capricornia Correctional Centre more than 10 years ago.
Four Queensland Corrective Services officers escorted Garland into Brisbane District Court on Tuesday for the start of his judge-only trial.
The three men were in the same unit as Garland at the central Queensland jail at the time of the alleged offences, crown prosecutor Catherine Birkett told the court.
One inmate turned around and saw Garland in the toilet cubicle with him before he was knocked unconscious in early 2013, Ms Birkett said.
When the inmate regained consciousness he was lying on the floor bleeding and in horrible pain with his pants around his ankles, the court was told.
He put in a successful request to be moved to another unit.
Ms Birkett said the inmate did not make a complaint until he was released from custody and returned to prison about five months later, also telling Corrective Services officers he did not want to be placed in the same unit as Garland.
Another inmate accused Garland of raping him in a prison toilet cubicle in March 2014 despite befriending the accused sex offender two weeks after arriving at the jail.
He made a formal complaint to police in 2019.
A third inmate alleged Garland overpowered then raped him in the prison toilet twice in the space of a week in August 2014.
The first alleged attack occurred a day after the inmate had been transferred to Capricornia Correctional Centre, Ms Birkett said.
Afterwards Garland told him not to tell anyone and to act like nothing had happened, the crown prosecutor alleged.
About a week later the inmate was again followed into a toilet cubicle by Garland, she said.
When the inmate asked what he was doing, Garland said he was "going to do the same thing he did last time", Ms Birkett alleged.
Garland raped the man again and threatened him, warning him not to say anything, it is alleged.
The inmate later told his solicitor at a court appearance and he alerted police.
Garland has pleaded not guilty to four counts of rape and one of assault with intent to rape.
The trial before Judge John Allen continues.
