After being processed in Mountjoy, a “protection assessment” took place and he was moved from one part of the jail to another. However, he did not raise any concerns for his safety before the attack.
A spokesperson for the Irish Prison Service said: "The Irish Prison Service can confirm that the prisoner who was seriously injured in an incident in Mountjoy Prison on Friday, July 29 has died. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends. The incident continues to be investigated by the IPS and the gardai."
Gardai have not ruled out that the attack was ordered from outside, and investigators are now probing if a Dublin assassin sought approval from a senior Kinahan member in the jail. Additionally, the Irish Mirror revealed how one of the gang “danced” on the victim as he lay prone.
