A prison officer has been jailed after falling pregnant following a secret year-long affair with an inmate. Corinne Redhead, 29, was caught out when officials found the inmate's name on the baby's birth certificate, reports the Express.
Luton Crown Court heard that Robert O'Connor was serving a 10-year sentence when a relationship between himself and Redhead ensued. At the time of the affair, the 29-year-old was working as a supervisor at HMP The Mount in Bovingdon.
The Sun reports that the defendant was six months pregnant when officers in the prison raided the inmate's cell and found a mobile phone hidden in his toilet. Officials found there were messages on the device between the pair, including 100 exchanged in just 72-hours.
O'Connor had saved Redhead's number in his phone under the name, 'My Baby'. The prison officer was arrested and then charged with misconduct.
Three months later she then gave birth to the child, with police finding O'Connor's name on the birth certificate. Drea Becker, mitigating told Luton Crown Court Redhead made a "terrible mistake" and "expresses remorse and shame".
He said: "The culpability, in my judgment, is high. This was not a momentary lapse but was carried out over an extended period of time.
"You could and should have stepped back, reported Mr O’Connor, and stepped back from the relationship.” For her crimes, Redhead was jailed for 25 months.
