Principals’ council seeks NCC units in self-financing colleges in Kerala

The Unaided College Principals’ Council has sought setting up of National Cadet Corps (NCC) units in self-financing colleges in the State.

In letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, council functionaries said that there are 1,097 colleges affiliated to the University of Kerala, Mahatma Gandhi University, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kannur University and the University of Calicut. Varghese Mathew, president of the council, said that 75% of these colleges were in the unaided sector, none of which have NCC units. He said that the process of education becomes complete only when students use the knowledge they gain for the welfare of society. In order to use the potential of the youth in colleges, service organisations such as the NCC should be active in all affiliated colleges.

Mr. Mathew said that NCC camps organised at the intra/inter-collegiate levels and the inter-State cultural exchange programmes also equip students to face various challenges in lives. However, Mr. Mathew said that such opportunities are denied to the students in self-financing colleges in Kerala. He urged the Prime Minister and the Defence Minister to take steps to launch NCC units in such colleges as well.
