'Inspired' Princess Charlotte wants to follow in mum Kate's footsteps with new hobby

Princess Charlotte wants to follow in her mum’s footsteps and play hockey when she grows up.

Commonwealth Games chiefs today revealed the seven-year-old was inspired by England’s 3-1 victory over India on Tuesday...even if she appeared rather tired in the stands.

Charlotte’s sporting ambition emerged as details of the Commonwealth Games first ‘Super Sunday’ for women were revealed.

Sunday sees the netball final, the women’s hockey final and the women’s cricket T20 final all take place on the same day.

Ama Agbeze, a Commonwealth Games gold medallist with the England netball team in 2018, said: “Kate and William went with Princess Charlotte to the England hockey match.

“Charlotte was saying she wants to play hockey. When I’d met Kate before she’d said that she played netball so I said ‘she has to play netball, stop’.

“But it doesn’t matter as long as she plays sport, she can play every sport under the sun.

“It will be good if people take her lead.

“If Princess Charlotte is sitting there and thinking ‘I want to do this’, how many other children are watching and thinking that?”

She admitted: “My daughter plays netball and now she wants to play hockey.”

Ama is on the 2022 Games organising committee with para athlete Ellie Simmonds, 27, who has retired from swimming after winning five Commonwealth titles.

She said: “There are so many children here. What memories they will have going back to school? That is inspiring the next generation.

“If you go to the beach volleyball, you get the athletes celebrating when they score and people dancing and the kids are loving that.

“All the energy at Smithfield for volleyball, it attracts people who may not have been into sport before.”

Birmingham 2022 has more medal events for women than men in a Games billed as the most diverse ever held.

Ticket sales have hit a record 1.4m, making them the best attended in the event’s history Ama joked: “My nephew wanted a ticket. I said ‘I’m on the board, but I can’t work miracles.”

A bumper 46 Golds will be up for grabs on Sunday.

The women’s and men’s 100m relay teams go for gold with the home nations facing tough competition from favourites Jamaica.

Cycling’s print superstar Mark Cavendish will compete in the road race - for the Isle of Man.

One teenager has already been inspired.

TV personality Fred Sirieix praised his daughter Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix after she secured gold in the women’s 10 metre platform diving.

The First Dates star proudly watched on from the sidelines as the 17-year-old clinched her first-ever senior international gold medal in the event.

Sirieix shared a video clip of her diving to his Instagram where he can be heard cheering her on as the crowd applauded her dive.

He captioned the post: “Gold!”, adding: “Well done mon duck” with a duck and heart emoji.

The maitre on Channel 4 ’s First Dates was also pictured cheering her on and celebrating following the achievement.

Spendolini-Sirieix topped the leaderboard with a huge 20.20 points, with her team-mate Lois Toulson winning silver.

Last year during her Olympic debut in Tokyo, she placed seventh at age 16.
