A young Prince William was spotted in Harry and Meghan's new Netflix documentary, as Harry addressed his mother's Panorama interview.
The first three episodes of the highly-anticipated 'Harry & Meghan' series dropped on Netflix this morning (Thursday December 8). The final three episodes will be available to stream next week, from Thursday December 15.
The first episode explores how Harry and Meghan met and the pressures they faced to keep their relationship a secret for as long as possible. It also delves into Harry's childhood, growing up in the royal family and the relationship with his late mum Princess Diana.
Explaining the Royal family's position in the public eye, the docu-series features archive footage from 1995. It shows the royal children posing on a skiing holiday in Switzerland.
They're surrounded by cameras as Prince William, Prince Harry, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie trudge through the heavy snow with their skis to pose for photos. A voice-over from a reporter explains: "Prince William today lead the Royal children to a photo call arranged by palace officials."
William is then asked if he's enjoying skiing, which he responds: "Yes, it's very good fun. I'm enjoying it".
Another clip showed Diana confronting a photographer and asking him to leave them alone. Lady Di put her hand over the camera lens and in a polite but authoritative voice, said: “As a parent, could I ask you to respect my children’s space? Because I brought the children out here for a holiday and we’d really appreciate the space.”
She added: “We’ve had 15 cameras following us today. As a parent, I want to protect the children. Thank you”.
Next, Harry discusses his mother's 1995 Panorama interview with Martin Bashir. He said: "I think she had a lived experience of how she was struggling living that life - she felt compelled to talk about it. Especially in that Panorama interview." He added: "I think we all now know that she was deceived into giving the interview but at the same time she spoke the truth of her experience."
Archive footage of the BBC interview showed Diana saying how she 'doesn't like being centre of attention' as she explained her struggles with the paparazzi. Harry continues: "My mum was harassed throughout her life with my dad. But after they separated the harassment went to new levels".
He explained that once his mother and father, Prince Charles, divorced and Diana 'left the institution,' she was by herself. He added: "Yeah, she may have been one of the most powerful, influential women in the world... but she was completely exposed to this."
He continued: "The pain and suffering of women marrying into this institution... I remember thinking 'how can I ever find someone who is willing and capable to withstand all the baggage that comes with being with me.' Every relationship I had within a matter of weeks or months were splattered all over the newspapers and that person's family harassed and lives turned upside down."
Reflecting on his childhood, Harry says in the first episode: “The majority of my memories are of being swarmed by paparazzi.” He tells the programme: “Rarely do we have a holiday without someone with a camera, you know, jumping out of a bush or something.
“Within the family, within the system, the advice that’s always given is ‘Don’t react, don’t feed into it’. There was always public pressure with its fair share of drama, stress and also tears, and witnessing those tears.
“I could always see it on my mum’s face. And I guess those were the moments where I thought ‘OK, hang on maybe, what am I? Who am I? What am I part of?'”
