Prince William delivers brilliant response to young Man Utd fan waiting to see the Queen

Prince William jokingly told a young Manchester United fan "we can't all be perfect" as he greeted mourners waiting to see the Queen.

Elizabeth II passed away at her Balmoral estate in Scotland earlier this month, aged 96. Her Majesty is currently lying-in-state at Westminster Hall in London ahead of her state funeral on Monday, with thousands of people queuing several hours to see her coffin.

Mourners include former England captain David Beckham, who queued more than 12 hours to pay his respects to the beloved monarch. The Man Utd legend is a well-known royalist and was given an OBE by the Queen in 2003 for his services to football.

William is a huge fan of sport in general, often handing out medals at FA Cup finals and other big events. He congratulated the Lionesses after they defeated Germany to win Euro 2022 - England's first major honour in international women's football - in July.

Although the Royal family do not collectively support a football team, William is a big Aston Villa fan. He often visits Villa Park and handed out medals when Villa reached the FA Cup final in 2015. Sadly for the His Royal Highness, Villa lost 4-0 to Arsenal.

William showed his love for Aston Villa again on Saturday afternoon when he spoke to mourners. One youngster asked the future king what football team he supports, to which he replied: "I'm a Villa fan! Aston Villa."

William's response was greeted with sighs from the crowd, leaving him to ask: "Are you Man Utd fans?" When they said "yes", the prince joked: "Well, we can't all be perfect."

One fan was then shouted "up the Villa" at William, which made the prince smile. William later thanked those who waited for hours to pay their respects to his late grandmother. He tweeted: "It means an awful lot that you're all here."

The price's beloved Villa put a smile on his face on Friday night by beating Southampton 1-0 at Villa Park. That was just their second Premier League win of the season to relieve the pressure on manager Steven Gerrard, with some critics calling for him to be sacked.

Gerrard dedicated Villa's victory to William. "I'm sure he probably knows the result, knowing him and how much he loves this club, he'll know the result and I'm sure he'll be very proud of the clean sheet," said the Villa manager in his post-match press conference.

"He messaged through the week, to the club, and I think that shows everything he thinks of this club and how much support he wants to give. For us to reward that with a result and a clean sheet, I'm sure he will be extremely proud."

Asked about the nature of that message, Gerrard added: "It was along the lines of 'would love to be there'. But obviously everyone understands his personal situation. But he is consistently in touch. He is very supportive of the boys individually, he loves them.

"I've spoken to him about them all. It's really impressive, his knowledge, and how much he is in to it. It certainly took me back and surprised me. He is very much involved in Villa. For him to message in the situation he is in is really impressive."
