Prince William becomes the Duke of Rothesay as the Royal Family inherit new titles

Prince William has been adorned with a new Scottish title as he becomes the Duke of Rothesay taking over from his father King Charles.

It means his wife Kate Middleton has become the Duchess of Rothesay, with the some of the Royal Family earning new titles due to the death of the Queen. Prince William will also be titled the Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, Lord of the Isles and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland report the Express.

He is also expected to be crowned the Prince of Wales, following in the footsteps of his father. This title is bestowed upon the heir to the throne by the incoming monarch. He will also keep his Duke of Cambridge moniker and become the Duke of Cornwall.

Kate Middleton will adopt the Duchess of Cornwall name and will become the first Princess of Wales since William's mum Diana.

Their children have become Prince George of Cornwall and Cambridge, Princess Charlotte of Cornwall and Cambridge, and Prince Louis of Cornwall and Cambridge.

They will eventually become "of Wales" when William is the Prince of Wales. King Charles' wife Camilla has become the Queen Consort after receiving approval from the Queen. It is the title used by the Queen Mother.

Prince Harry's titles have not changed but his children's have, with his son Archie and daughter Lilibet now becoming official prince and princesses due to King Charles ascending to the throne.

Archie Mountbatten-Windsor is technically history's first Prince of Sussex due to his father being the Duke of Sussex. His parents' rejected the chance for him to be called Earl of Dumbarton when he was born.

His sister Lilibet is now a princess and if she uses the title, she will be HRH Princess Lili of Sussex. She is the first Princess of Sussex.

Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, could be passed the Duke of Edinburgh moniker his brother Charles adopted following the death of their father Prince Philip.

King Charles can decide to bestow this title on his brother or leave it in abeyance with reports that he will make this decision after he settles in as the new monarch.

If Prince Edward becomes the Duke of Edinburgh, his wife Sophie would become the Duchess of Edinburgh. A number of royals titles have not changed due to the death of the Queen, with Prince Harry (Duke of Sussex), Princess Anne (Princess Royal), Prince Andrew (Duke of York) and Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice all remaining the same.

In terms of the order of succession, after King Charles is his son Prince William, following by his three children Prince George, nine, Princess Charlotte, seven, and Prince Louis, four.

Prince Harry is fifth, followed by his two children Archie and Lilibet. Then, it is Prince Andrew and his eldest daughter Princess Beatrice and her only child Sienna Mapelli Mozzi.

The Duke of York's second child Princess Eugenie is 11th in line followed by her son August Brooksbank. The Queen's fourth son Prince Edward is 13th, with his children Viscount Severn and Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor after him.

Princess Anne, The Queen's sister, is 16th with her son Peter Phillips behind her. Then, his two children Savannah and Isla are 18th and 19th respectively. The Princess Royal's second child, Zara Tindall is 20th in line, and her three children, Mia, Lena and Lucas make up the final heirs to the throne.

Following a rare announcement on Thursday September 8 that doctors were "concerned" for the Queen's health, she was placed under medical supervision. Royal Family members rushed to join her at her side, including son King Charles III and grandson Prince William.

A statement from the Royal Family announcing the monarch's death read: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."
