Prince William and Kate moving to Windsor to be near the Queen and take on more royal duties

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are said to relocate to Windsor from their current home at Kensington Palace in London, reports The Mirror. And now it's emerged there was one big reason behind the decision

When they moved to their current home in 2013 it was following a £12 million renovation and royal fans assumed they were planning to stay there for the long haul. But William, who is celebrating his 40th birthday this week, now has his eye fixed on Adelaide Cottage in Windsor.

The home, which has four bedrooms, needs “no extra taxpayer-funded security or costly refurb”, according to The Sun, and is close by to the Queen who now lives full-time at Windsor Castle. Indeed it's this proximity to his grandmother that William is after in a house-hunt and a royal insider told the Daily Mail that the Duke wants to be close to the Queen as she continues to delegate more royal duties.

Reportedly, William speaks to his grandmother a few times a week and, since the death of Prince Philip in April 2021, they want to be near to each other. The Daily Mail were told by the insider: "It's one of the things that has hastened their move to Berkshire this summer. Losing the Duke of Edinburgh has a left a big hole in all their lives. He was a great counsel to William and he feels very protective of his grandmother."

They added that Prince William: "is always checking in with (the Queen) to make sure she understands why things are happening in a certain way". Her Majesty, who is 96 years old, has been designating more and more royal duties to her son Prince Charles as well as Prince William, such as when the pair presided over the recent State Opening on Parliament in her place.

The Cambridges are hoping to move into Adelaide Cottage this summer and expect their children, Prince George, eight, Princess Charlotte, seven, and Prince Louis, four, to start school nearby in September. They also intend to have no live-in staff and will reportedly keep their options open with Kensington Palace remaining ready for them in London as well as keeping the keys to their Norfolk home, Anmer Hall.
