Prince Harry reveals his 'sweet tradition' for Princess Diana's birthday

Prince Harry has revealed how he remembers his late mother Princess Diana on her birthday

Prince Harry has shared the "sweet" way he marks the birthday of his late mother Diana, Princess of Wales.

The Duke of Sussex was just 12 years old when his mother was killed in a car accident in Paris, France in 1997 and he's now revealed he keeps her memory alive by celebrating her birthday on July 1 every year by sharing a lemon drizzle cake with his wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

Harry made the revelation while answering questions during an appearance at Scotty's Summer Festival at Maxstoke Castle in Warwickshire, England on Saturday (11.07.26), saying: "Yes, we do lemon drizzle cake. I think traditions are really, really important. Especially when they’re sweet."

Harry has previously revealed the death of Diana - who would have turned 65 on July 1 - was a factor in his decision to step away from life as a working member of the royal family and retreat to North America with his family.

During an appearance at the InterEdge Summit in Melbourne, Australia in April, Harry told the audience the tragedy convinced him he didn't want to be a part of the royal family system.

He said: "I was like: 'I don’t want this job. I don’t want this role - wherever this is headed, I don’t like it.' I was very much against it, and I stuck my head in the sand for years and years."

However, Harry eventually changed his mind and became a working member of the royal family before walking away back in 2020 after his marriage to Megan.

The royal's recent comments about Diana came at the end of a rare visit to the UK during which he gave his father, King Charles, the chance to see his two grandchildren for the first time in four years.

Harry and Megham - who live in the celebrity enclave of Montecito, California - had initially planned to visit the UK with their children, but Harry arrived solo last week following disagreements over plans for his stay - including where he would be staying, and the security he would have.

However, Buckingham Palace confirmed on Friday (10Jul26) that Charles and Queen Camilla hosted Harry, Meghan and their children at Highgrove House - the king’s country residence in Gloucestershire, England.

No images have been released from the reunion, and no further details will be provided, as it was a "private family occasion”, the palace said.

It’s unclear where the Harry, Meghan and the children stayed while in the UK, but it’s believed they had been on vacation in Europe prior to Harry’s journey to the UK.

The meeting marks the first time Archie and Lili have been in the UK since June 2022, when they travelled over to attend the Platinum Jubilee celebrations for the late Queen Elizabeth.
