It is pretty much common knowledge that the Queen is partial to the odd portion of fish and chips. It has even been previously reported that she regularly orders from her favourite local chippy during stays at her Scottish home in Balmoral.
But most people would be surprised to learn that Her Majesty has also sampled another takeaway treat more often gobbled down by post-nightclub revellers after accepting a dare from her grandson Prince Harry. The challenge to eat a doner kebab was set during Harry's 32nd birthday party at Sandringham House, as reported by MyLondon.
And a royal insider revealed: "Harry had enjoyed a few glasses of wine and, when the Queen asked him if there was anything particular he would like for his birthday, he blurted out, 'You have to eat a doner kebab'. She had no idea exactly what one of those was, and agreed immediately to the challenge, much to Philip’s surprise.
"As a Greek, he was perfectly aware of what was in store for her. The conversation moved on and it looked like everyone had forgotten about it.
"But, (at a later date) the Krazy Kebabs takeaway in Swaffham, 17 miles away, got a delivery order by telephone… to Sandringham House." Taking up the story, delivery driver Ahmet Sudoku told the Suffolk Gazette: "I assumed the food was for a servant.
"But, when I got to the entrance, a butler took it, and said it was for the Queen. I hope she enjoyed it – we are known for the best kebabs in Norfolk."
A royal source added that the monarch had "expected something entirely different, but started to eat it anyway". Staff also reported that she found the sauce too spicy but enjoyed half of the kebab before giving up.
"Prince Philip, who was roaring with laughter, took a photograph on his mobile phone, and sent it through to Prince Harry as proof that his grandmother had completed the dare," the insider said. The Queen is not alone in the Royal Family with her taste for a spot of takeaway indulgence either.
Prince Charles is understood to be a pizza fan, while Prince William, when asked about his favourite dish, told BBC Radio Five Live’s That Peter Crouch Podcast: "Chicken masala, love that, a bit of flavour - I'm not a vindaloo man, put it that way."
