Prince Harry could lose his title as Duke of Sussex if MPs get their way. One senior member said he had "trashed" the royal family through his memoir, Spare, and recent television interviews.
Both have released a series of bombshells about his relationships within the family, notably with King Charles, Queen Consort, Camilla, and his brother, the Prince of Wales. Now, a senior MP wants to see him punished by losing his title.
Conservative Bob Seely is trying to push through legislation that could see Harry's Duke of Sussex title stripped. It would result in it being downgraded by the Privy Council, reports BirminghamLive.
Mr Seely told The Sun: “They seem to hate the institution of the royal family but seem perfectly happy to use its titles. Don’t use the titles to trash the institution. Harry is not behaving with any dignity whatsoever in all this.”
He earlier told the BBC: “If he hates the institution so much, why doesn’t he… set an example and become Mr Windsor. To trade on titles while at the same time trashing the Royal Family, the whole thing is sad and desperate.”
Tory MP Tim Loughton said: “The Duke of Sussex has refused to take the advice of his grandfather Prince Philip of ‘look up and look out, say less, do more, and get on with the job’. The way he has conducted himself in such a public way is embarrassing to the residents of Sussex and deeply hurtful to his family coming so soon after the death of the Queen. He has clearly opted out of the job and therefore he should opt out of the titles and the perks that come with it.”
Mr Seely said there is a “political issue” with Harry’s comments, since he quit as a senior working royal more than two years ago. Mr Seely said he planned to bring forward proposed legislation that could eventually strip the couple of their royal titles. He said he had been thinking about the bill even before the Netflix documentary emerged, telling the PA news agency: “There is a political issue.”
Mr Seely added: “As well as trashing his family and monetising his misery for public consumption, he is also attacking some important institutions in this country.”
