Prince Harry and Meghan Markle 'spent £244 on one-year-old Lilibet's birthday cake'

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle spent £244 on an extravagant two-tier birthday cake for Lilibet's first birthday, say reports.

The floral pink cake, which was coated in strawberry buttercream, was provided by the same baker that made the Sussexes' wedding cake in 2018, the Daily Mail reports.

Harry and Meghan threw Lilibet a garden party at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor last weekend to mark her turning one during their first trip to the UK since relocating to California.

The event included balloons, party games and picnic snacks, with Mike and Zara Tindall believed to be among the guests.

Claire Ptak, an American baker based in east London, oversaw the low-key celebrations including the cake, which featured Lilibet's name and cascading pink peonies, with an Amalfi lemon and elderflower filling.

Violet Cakes, Ptak's bakery business, described the cake on their website as having “three layers of vanilla sponge drizzled with elderflower syrup and filled with Amalfi lemon curd”.

Ptak wrote on the brand's Instagram : “It was an absolute pleasure to make this special cake last week for Lilibet’s birthday. Wishing her a very happy year ahead!

“The inside was the Amalfi lemon and elderflower cake I created for the Duke and Duchess’s wedding in 2018, but this time we covered it with a strawberry buttercream specially for Lilibet.”

Among the gifts Lilibet reportedly received were a pastel pink VW Beetle ride-on car, while there has been speculation that Prince Charles may have bought her a swing similar to one he purchased for Prince George after an aide was seen unloading it the Sussexes' private jet in Santa Barbara.

The couple left the UK with children Archie and Lilibet the day after the party as they returned to California whilst the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations were ongoing.

It is believed that three-year-old Archie's godfather, Charlie Van Straubenzee, and his brother Tom – who is Princess Charlotte's godfather – were invited to Lilibet's birthday bash.

Royal commentator and friend of the Sussexes Omid Scobie said on Twitter that the couple had invited close friends and family for an “intimate backyard picnic” as he posted a picture on the social media platform.

A source told The Sun that the party was: “A lovely do and had everything you'd expect from a child's birthday party.

“The idea was for it to be very relaxed and casual, with people free to pop in and out as they wished.”

Lilibet was making her first visit to the UK and met several members of the royal family for the first time including her great-grandmother the Queen, whose childhood nickname she is named after.
