Harry and Meghan were reportedly not told Prince Andrew would move into Frogmore after being evicted from their official UK residence.
King Charles is claimed to have made the decision to remove the couple from the royal residence within hours of Harry's memoir Spare being released, which revealed intimate details of his crumbling relationship with the family.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have confirmed they had been asked to hand over the keys, but sources say they were not told the property would be offered to the Duke of York.
A friend admitted that the decision had not been welcomed by the couple, noting that they had “made that place their home”, reports The Telegraph.
Despite their move to the US and stepping back from royal life, it's understood the Sussexes considered the cottage, which is ensconced on the Windsor estate, the “only place that’s left as a safe space” for them and their children in the UK.
Last March, Harry and Meghan had opted to renew their release of the property.
The late Queen gifted Frogmore Cottage to Harry and Meghan following their wedding back in 2018.
Frogmore was converted into one home in 2019, having previously been five separate properties for staff working on the Windsor Estate.
The whole renovation cost the Sovereign Grant £2.4million and the property is thought to have five bedrooms, a kitchen, a sitting room and a nursery first designed for Archie.
A spokesperson for the Sussexes said: “We can confirm The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been requested to vacate their residence at Frogmore Cottage."
He claims that the couple was told the property was needed for "someone else" and that relations between Harry and Meghan and the rest of the Firm was at "an all-time low".
Charles' decision to evict the Sussexes also throws into further doubt whether they will be given an invite to his coronation in May.

But any idea of an apology to Harry does not appear on the cards from Charles or William.

A source, said to be a family friend, told The Mail : "I hear that William has no intention whatsoever of apologising and remains incandescent, especially around the way his wife, the Princess of Wales, has been treated."
