Prince Charles 'emotional' in first meeting with Lilibet and 'thrilled' to see Meghan

Prince Charles and wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, were said to be "very emotional" following their first meeting with granddaughter Lilibet during Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's UK visit.

Meghan, 40, and her husband Harry, 37, returned to London earlier this year to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. This was their first family visit to the UK since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down as senior royals in 2020, as they took ample opportunity to introduce their kids to their extended family.

Lillibet, now one, celebrated her first birthday over the Jubilee weekend as Harry and Meghan threw her a party with their friends and family. Charles, 73, and Camilla, 74, were both said to be "absolutely thrilled" to see the whole family come over from across the pond for the momentous occasion, writes OK! Magazine.

According to Town & Country, a royal source said: “It was a fantastic visit and of course the Prince was delighted to see his grandson and meet his granddaughter for the first time,” when questioned on the subject by reporters during a briefing about Clarence House’s annual financial review.

They continued: “It was wonderful to have them back in Britain, the Prince and the Duchess were absolutely thrilled to see them. The Prince of course hasn’t seen his grandson Archie for a bit of time and so it was very, very, very special to have some time with him.

Charles, who reportedly left the Royal couple "feeling slighted" with his gesture to Kate Middleton, is said to have got "emotional" over meeting Lili. The source added: "He hadn’t met Lilibet, his granddaughter, and so to meet her for the first time was I think very emotional, a very wonderful thing.”

Despite the alleged happy meeting, American-British journalist Christopher Anderson told Royally US that the "curtain has come down” on the possibility of harmony between the estranged father and son, and mentioned how "heartbroken" Princess Diana would be at the state of the relations between the two.

Host of Royally US Christine Ross asked: “We saw some reports that Meghan and Harry were seen leaving Charles’ home. Is there any truth to that? Do we know what they talked about? And did it maybe move us towards healing any of these rifts?”

Mr Anderson said: “Well, I understand that it was a perfunctory meeting and that there was no real breakthrough. And I have a feeling that Prince Harry definitely went there hoping for some sort of rapprochement but there were no touchy-feely vibes coming back in his direction.

“So, I think the curtain has come down. And one of the things I think is so sad about this is Diana, were she alive today, would be heartbroken by this. She would have understood why Harry would have wanted to make his own life and wanted to go to California."
