Prince Andrew stripped of 'freedom of York' title after unanimous vote

Prince Andrew has become the first person to be stripped of his honorary 'freedom of York' title following a brutal unanimous vote by York City Council.

The decision was made in an Extraordinary Council Meeting held this evening where councillors also called for the royal's Duke of York title to be removed.

It's the latest blow for for the Queen's second son who in February settled a U.S. civil lawsuit by Virginia Giuffre, accusing him of sexually abusing her when she was a teenager.

Andrew, 62, has avoided a potentially explosive trial with the settlement said to be £12million.

He has continually denied the allegations against him.

Many councillors discussing the motion to remove Prince Andrew's Honorary Freedom of the City of York in the meeting this evening noted that the move was merely a starting point for the changes that should be made.

A number of the councillors and members of public who spoke at the meeting at York Racecourse on Wednesday called for either the Queen or the Government to strip Andrew of the title Duke of York and thereby remove what Labour councillor Aisling Musson called: "This stain of an association with this city."

He is the first person ever to have the Freedom of the City removed, councillors were told.

There were two formal abstentions - from the Lord Mayor and Lord Mayor elect.

Councilor Gwen Swinburn commented that "Mr Andrew Windsor" was a "disgrace" who brought "shame and repetitional damage everywhere he goes, including to our city".

"He needs to be declared persona non grata in York," she said.
