Hambrook Primary School was closed today (January 3) due to a failure in their heating system. The school had no hot water or heating and all children and staff were told to stay at home.

The closure has come on the day that supposed to be the first day back after the Christmas break. In a post on Twitter from the school, a spokesperson said: "URGENT - SCHOOL CLOSURE To ALL PARENTS/CARERS, Due to a failure in our heating system, school has no hot water or heating today.

"Therefore, school will be closed for ALL PUPILS AND STAFF TODAY. We will update you as soon as we know more."

In an update given by the school to BristolLive, a spokesperson confirmed the issue had to fixed and classes would be back on tomorrow (January 4). The spokesperson said: "They had a malfunction with their boiler, which meant they would not have hot water or heating, so they were closed for the day and advised parents of this at 8am.

"The fault has been rectified and the school will reopen as normal tomorrow and they advised parents of this at 3pm today."

The news comes on the same day that Bristol was pounded by severe rain with a 90–95 percent possibility of downpours throughout the day. This follows previous wet weather, a yellow weather warning for rain was in effect on Saturday, December 31.

There were also flood warnings in place across the South West on New Years Eve, largely along the banks of the region's major waterways.
