Primark to close all shops for Queen's funeral on Monday as Bank Holiday announced

Primark will close all its stores for the Queen's funeral next Monday, the company has announced.

The retailer's 191 stores will remain closed on September 19 to give colleagues a chance to pay their respects to the late monarch.

The shops will open the following day, on September 20.

Retail giant John Lewis also confirmed it will close all of its department stores on the funeral day as well out of respect for the Queen.

A Bank Holiday has been declared on the day of the funeral to allow as many people as possible to watch it.

A spokesperson for Primark said: "Our stores, depots and Head Office in the UK will be closed on Monday 19th September to give our colleagues the opportunity to pay their respects and watch the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

"We will reopen as normal on Tuesday."

Supermarkets including Sainsbury's, Tesco, Tesco, Waitrose and Morrisons also announced their plans to close for a limited amount of hours during the funeral.

A host of world leaders, including US President and First Lady Joe Biden and Jill Biden, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Sergio Mattarella, President of Italy - will attend Queen Elizabeth II's funeral.

The Queen's coffin will be taken in a grand military procession from the Palace of Westminster to Westminster Abbey.

The service will be televised and a national two minutes' silence is expected to be held.

After the service, the coffin will be taken in procession from Westminster Abbey to Wellington Arch and then travel to Windsor.

Once there, the hearse will travel in procession to St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle via the Long Walk, after which a televised committal service will take place in St George's Chapel.

Later in the evening, there will be a private interment service with senior members of the royal family.

The Queen's final resting place will be the King George VI memorial chapel, an annex to the main chapel - where her mother and father were buried, along with the ashes of her sister, Princess Margaret.

Philip's coffin will move from the Royal Vault to the memorial chapel to join the Queen's.
