Primark shoppers' outrage over 'sneaky' price change on tags amid cost of living crisis

Primark is a one-stop shop for fast fashion lovers who want to grab a bargain - but how much of a bargain is anything really these days? One savvy shopper has claimed that the last time they were in Primark they noticed a change in prices, even accusing the retailer of being 'sneaky' because they were peeling off the original prices, and then sticking a new price label on the underside of the tag.

Primark had already warned customers that prices were set to hike in 'autumn and winter ' - so this could be the inflation people are seeing now when they're shopping in their local store.

TikTok user Danny Cardwell furiously captioned his video: "You’ve got some explaining to do. Cost of living b******", followed by an angry face when he noticed the different prices on an item of clothing.

The video says: "Primark doing us dirty by removing tags and putting prices up. Sneaky f****."

Danny shows a pair of shorts which have a tag on stating they are £12 that he's purchased as they are in a bag, comparing them to the same pair of shorts on the shop floor where the bottom part of the tag has been taken off, and on the back of the tag itself there is a new price of £14.

In the comments many people were shocked, but some claimed that they'd experienced the same thing. While several fellow users claimed to be staff members at Primark who had been instructed to remove and re-add labels to clothes.

One said: "Try being on 6am delivery having to rip all the prices off everything."

Another wrote: "I work at Primark and we have a whole team of people who remove the old tags and put stickers with new prices on the products."

But others were sympathetic to the price hike, given the current economic climate.

Someone else stated: "Every Primark has done it because everything is going up lol."

Another pointed out: "Why sneaky? Prices are increasing everywhere and maybe it’s easier than tag everything again, however, I think it's just £1 more - still cheap."

"A combination of Brexit, Covid, and the cost of living crisis", a different user added.

Primark confirmed that their prices are increasing, and they highlighted that they've made no secret of it.

A Primark spokesperson told The Mirror: "Great value pricing is at the heart of the Primark brand and we know that’s never been more important to our customers.

"Given the extraordinary increase in our costs, we announced back in April that we had no option but to increase prices across a selection of this season’s autumn/winter ranges.

"We’ve worked hard to make this process as seamless as possible, however, we know there's been some instances where labels have not been updated to reflect the new prices.

"We’re really sorry about this – we will always honour the price on the label [where made aware] and encourage customers who think they may have been overcharged to speak to a manager in-store who can help them."
