Primark and Greggs clothing range lands in Soho pop-up

Don’t blame yourself if you missed this collaboration on your 2022 bingo card - fast food and fast fashion is not the first of wacky partnerships. No British high street is complete without these two quick stops: Primark and Greggs, with their new line of clothing certainly stopping people in their tracks.

The clothing store and bakery have opened a pop-up Soho boutique to display their limited fashion line to the public this Thursday 17 and Friday 18, following a puzzling stunt involving rogue pastries in a Primark display window.

Confusion at the window display subsided as the two companies quickly announced their line of Greggs themed apparel... to much internet excitement.

The 11-piece collection includes a full black tracksuit set, hoodie and sweatshirt options in off-white and grey, and different t-shirt designs in blue and black – with one shirt celebrating the “ICONIC” vegan sausage roll.

Accessories are also available such as the sausage roll boxers, reversible Greggs logo bucket hat and themed socks, as well as pairs of trainers and sliders plastered with the bakery’s logo.

Free tickets to the boutiques sold out in four minutes to 300 lucky applicants, who will get a “first look” at the line before it is released to 60 stores nationwide on Saturday 19.

Visitors of the Soho or Birmingham pop-ups will be able to secure two free pieces of their choice from the line and perhaps a couple of pastries.

Reactions have been decidedly polarised with some relishing in the world play and others questioning the joint venture.

Jarrell Cheney, 27, who works in advertising, is no stranger to a good PR stunt. He stopped outside the pop-up for a better look today with the thought: “What is going on?”

He said: “I get that they’re going for the exclusivity of it, but I just don’t know if it has the same impact as something like the IKEA and Off-White collaboration.

“It’s fun PR and it’s interesting. Do I love it? No. Did it make me stop? Yes – and I think that’s the goal.”

Social media commenters noted the missed opportunities like “Pie-mark”,“Sausage roller neck leading the way” and one user enquiring about Ted Baker’s involvement.

Joe Hegarty, 22, was also taken aback by the display as he passed by the boutique today. He said: “I’m not from here but it’s not something you’d normally see – I didn’t realise this collab was a thing.

“I’d maybe wear one of those hats at a festival, as a joke – but not to the club or anything.”

A less confusing aspect of this collaboration is the opening of the largest Greggs café in the largest Primark, Tasty by Greggs, open from Saturday 12 February.
