ON THIS DAY IN SPORT
1987: Europe’s Ryder Cup team made history by inflicting the first home defeat on the United States since the tournament began in 1927. The Europeans, under captain Tony Jacklin, won 15-13 to retain the title in Ohio.
2003: Ricky Hatton made the 10th defence of his WBU light-welterweight title. Aldo Rios retired at the end of the ninth round in the Manchester fight.
2012: John Terry was banned for four matches and given a £220,000 fine for racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand following a Football Association independent regulatory commission hearing.
2015: Lewis Hamilton won the Japanese Grand Prix to equal Ayrton Senna’s tally of 41 career victories.
2016: Sam Allardyce left his job as England manager by mutual consent, with Gareth Southgate initially appointed by the Football Association to take charge for the next four matches.
2024: Manchester City midfielder Rodri was ruled out for the rest of the season. The Spain international suffered anterior cruciate ligament damage in City’s Premier League clash with Arsenal. He won the Ballon d’Or the following month.
