President Xi to Hold Talks With Biden, Macron at G-20 Leaders Summit, APEC Next Week

What’s new: President Xi Jinping will hold bilateral meetings with U.S. President Joe Biden and French leader Emmanuel Macron when he attends the Group of 20 (G-20) Leaders’ Summit in Indonesia and the Economic Leaders’ Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in Thailand next week.

Xi will be in Bali for the G-20 Leaders’ Summit from Monday to Thursday, and then head to Bangkok for the APEC meeting where he will stay from Thursday to Nov. 19, according to foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying.

The background: The G-20 members represent more than 80% of global GDP and 60% of the world’s population, according to the group’s website. It holds a yearly summit involving the heads of state and government.

The meeting between Xi and Biden, which the White House has said will take place on Monday, will mark the first time the pair have met face-to-face since the U.S. president took office in 2021.

APEC is a regional economic forum established in 1989 and now has 21 members, leveraging the growing interdependence of the Asia-Pacific.
