President Droupadi Murmu on Monday conferred some of the country’s highest civilian awards, recognising distinguished contributions across art, public service and business etc.
Renowned violinist N. Rajam was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honour, for her lifelong contribution to Indian classical music. Known for her unique “gayaki ang” style on the violin, Rajam has been a towering figure in Hindustani music for decades.
The Padma Bhushan was conferred on former Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari in recognition of his role in public affairs, and on veteran banker Uday Kotak for his contributions to trade and industry, particularly in building one of India’s leading financial institutions.
Veteran actor Dharmendra was posthumously honoured with the Padma Vibhushan for his immense contribution to Indian cinema. His wife and actor-turned-politician Hema Malini received the award on his behalf.
Among other honourees, former UGC Chairman Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar received the Padma Shri in the field of literature and education.
Indian women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur was conferred the Padma Shri for her contribution to Indian cricket.
Paralympic gold medallist Praveen Kumar was also awarded the Padma Shri for his achievements in para high jump.
Silambam exponent K. Pajanivel of Puducherry was conferred the Padma Shri for his contribution to traditional martial arts.
Satyanarayan Nuwal, Chairman of Solar Group, received the Padma Shri for his contribution to India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.
Padma Awards - one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
The Awards are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities, viz., art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc. 'Padma Vibhushan' is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; 'Padma Bhushan' for distinguished service of high order, and 'Padma Shri' for distinguished service in any field.
For 2026, the President has approved conferment of 131 Padma Awards -- five Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan and 113 Padma Shri.
