US President Joe Biden recently engaged in a conversation with Jordan’s King Abdullah II, highlighting Jordan’s crucial role in upholding stability and reducing tensions in the Middle East post the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria.
The White House disclosed that during the call, President Biden reiterated his unwavering support for a Syrian-led transition process under the United Nations' guidance, as stipulated in UN Security Council Resolution 2254. This resolution, adopted in 2015, lays out a framework for a peace process in Syria through UN-mediated discussions between the Syrian government and opposition factions.
Biden also addressed the situation in eastern Syria, underscoring the US commitment to the D-ISIS mission. The President highlighted recent airstrikes carried out against a gathering of ISIS fighters and leaders. Furthermore, he expressed the United States' backing for Jordan's stability and its pivotal role in preserving peace and defusing tensions across the Middle East.
The leaders delved into the pressing need to finalize a ceasefire and hostage release agreement, coupled with a substantial increase in humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza. They mutually agreed to maintain regular communication directly and through their respective teams to stay abreast of developments in the region.
