Premier League wrap: Matt Doherty limps off early as Spurs brush off Aston Villa

Matt Doherty limped off midway through the first half as Tottenham Hotspur enhanced their chances of a top four finish as they beat Aston Villa 4-0.

The Dubliner was forced off inside 20 minutes as he was unable to recover following two heavy challenges from Villa’s Matty Cash.

Stephen Kenny will hope it’s not too serious, having already lost James McClean for the opening UEFA Nations League games in June.

Son Heung-Min had already put Spurs 1-0 to the good after just four minutes, and he made it his hat-trick in the second half after Dejan Kulusevski added the second.

The result sees Spurs move three points clear of Arsenal, who earlier lost at home to Brighton & Hove Albion, in the race for the last Champions League spot.

Mikel Arteta’s men fell to a 2-1 defeat in the lunchtime game against a Brighton side who are all but guaranteed another season of Premier League football.

Goals in either half from Leandro Trossard and Enock Mwepu saw the Eagles cruise to victory despite Martin Odegaard grabbing a last-minute consolation.

Manchester United also saw their top four chances diminish as they were beaten 1-0 by Everton at Goodison Park thanks to Anthony Gordon’s strike midway through the first half.

The win provides some respite for Frank Lampard’s side, who move four points clear of the relegation zone, at least for 24 hours.

Ireland under-21 international Will Smallbone was a late substitute for Southampton as they were hammered 6-0 by Chelsea at St Mary’s.

Two each from Mason Mount and Timo Werner, and a goal apiece for Marcos Alonso and Kai Havertz, saw Chelsea six to the good by the 54th minute.

And Leeds United saw their prospects of survival increase as goals from Raphinha, Rodrigo and Jack Harrison helped them to a 3-0 win over relegation-threatened Watford.

Sunday’s games see Brentford face West Ham, Leicester City at home to Crystal Palace and Norwich City host Burnley.

All eyes will be on the Etihad in the evening, however, as Manchester City host Liverpool in a game that could do much to decide the destination of the Premier League trophy.
