Premier League to introduce water breaks ahead of Leeds United's trip to Southampton

Water breaks will be reintroduced for this weekend's Premier League fixtures to help players cope with the searing heatwave across England.

The Met Office have issued an Amber weather warning with highs of 28°C forecast in Southampton for Leeds United's visit to St Mary's on Saturday.

One-minute drink breaks were first introduced in the Premier League in June 2020, to help players deal with the demands of a gruelling fixture list, after the three-month break imposed by Covid.

However, the intervals were scrapped ahead of the next season following criticism that managers were using them as a tool to provide tactical advice to their players.

The Football Association does have a long-standing rule that all Premier League and Football League games played in heat in excess of 30°C can utilise water breaks.
