Premier League table without VAR again backs up Mikel Arteta's Arsenal decisions fury

A new study has revealed Arsenal would be fourth in the Premier League if VAR wasn't in operation.

The fresh data will frustrate manager Mikel Arteta, as the Gunners lost four points last season due to the technology - causing them to miss out on a Europa League spot.

The Spaniard launched a scathing attack on the Stockley Park officials last April following his team's 1-0 defeat against Everton at the Emirates.

"This has been building up," moaned Arteta after Arsenal had a decision overturned. "Enough is enough. Today I have had enough."

And the Gunners boss is unlikely to be pleased with the latest study, which shows his team have lost a point this term as a result of VAR.

Arsenal aren't the biggest losers, however. That award goes to Everton, who have missed out on six points because of the technology - according to ESPN's research.

If VAR was never introduced, the Toffees would be in 11th - nine points clear of the relegation zone.

The reality, however, is far more worrying. Everton are just two places and four points above the bottom three, a gap that will be cut if they lose their next game to Newcastle.

Speaking of the Toon, Eddie Howe's side would be four points better off and outside of the drop zone if it wasn't for VAR.

Basement boys Burnley would also have three more points to their name, while Brentford would be well clear of danger with a further two points.

Regarding the title race, VAR has added a point to leaders Manchester City's tally and taken one away from Liverpool's. Without it, the gap would be seven points instead of nine.

Leicester are the only other outfit to suffer as a result of the technology, losing a point.

ESPN's data is calculated using the team's form, the time of each review and the expected goals (xG) at that moment, the team's general strength and the impact of the incident.

VAR was introduced in the Premier League ahead of the 2019-20 campaign and has become one of the English game's most controversial talking points.

"I personally think the game's better without it," said former England captain and current Derby County manager Wayne Rooney when asked for his opinion in February 2021.

"Even though you are frustrated at times after games, we have to rely on the referees to do the job the best they can... and respect their views on it."

The teams not impacted by the technology - in terms of points - are Norwich, Chelsea, West Ham, Brighton and Leeds.

The two sides to gain the most points from Stockley Park are Watford and Wolves - picking up three points each - although the latter would still find themselves in eighth.

Crystal Palace (two points gained), Aston Villa (two points) and Southampton (one point) have all jumped up two places as a result of VAR.

Finally, Manchester United are one point and place better off with the technology and Tottenham also have an extra point, although they would be remain in seventh.
