De Bruyne gave City the lead inside six minutes as his shot took a fortuitous deflection off Fabinho’s leg and skidded past Alisson Becker in the Liverpool goal.
It took just seven minutes for Liverpool to level as Andy Robertson’s cross was cushioned down by Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Portuguese international Jota fired home.
City regained the lead eight minutes before half time as Brazilian striker Jesus ghosted in at the back post and steered the ball past Alisson.
Liverpool trailed at the break but it took them less than a minute to get back on top as Mo Salah played a lovely through ball for Mané to rifle past Ederson.
City sub Riyad Mahrez had a great chance to win in injury time as he went one-on-one with Alisson but his chipped effort cleared the crossbar.
In the earlier games, Norwich City moved back within seven points of safety with a 2-0 win over fellow relegation candidates Burnley.
