Premier League could plan radical change to domestic cups that would help Newcastle United

Newcastle United's season could be helped by the Premier League after postponements due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the World Cup over the months of November and December have derailed the already busy schedule.

The last two seasons have seen FA Cup and League Cup replays cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic and teams and fans are now calling for the same to happen because of the fixture congestion.

The Magpies had their game against West Ham postponed after the Queen's death and now due to the World Cup taking place in the winter months, the Premier League schedule is incredibly congested but plans to change that are already being proposed.

According to the Times, new proposals are ready to be discussed at a Premier League shareholder's meeting on Wednesday - one of which could be the scrapping of third and fourth round replays all together after the 2023/24 season.

Other proposals could see the League Cup be radically reformed by having top teams that are involved in European competitions field under-21 lineups only in order to level the playing field and encourage more competition.

This could then ease fixture congestion for those at the top of the football pyramid while providing other clubs a greater chance of silverware. But with the report from the Times explaining that teams further down the pyramid are open to the idea, the EFL hasn't been approached.

There are also suggestions of completing scrapping the League Cup all together and then moving FA Cup matches to midweek slots and others could be a "New Deal for Football" which would funnel more funds further down into the EFL pyramid and further into grassroots football than the current parachute payment system.

With Newcastle's fixture list after the World Cup seemingly growing by the week due to postponements and international breaks, some of the proposals could help them in the future if another situation like this arises in the future.
