Premier League ban gambling shirt sponsors as Newcastle move on from £6.5m deal with Fun88

Premier League clubs will be banned from having gambling sponsorships on the front of matchday shirts from the beginning of the 2026/2027 season. Newcastle United are currently one of eight top-flight clubs to profit from agreements with bookmakers, although the Magpies' six-year association with Fun88 will end following the current campaign.

The announcement on Thursday comes as a part of a consultation between the Premier League, its clubs and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Existing and new sponsorship agreements with betting firms will be allowed until the end of the 2025/2026 season, and clubs will still be able to feature gambling sponsorships in other areas such as shirt sleeves.

The statement released on Thursday read: "Premier League clubs have today collectively agreed to withdraw gambling sponsorship from the front of clubs’ matchday shirts, becoming the first sports league in the UK to take such a measure voluntarily in order to reduce gambling advertising.

"The announcement follows an extensive consultation involving the League, its clubs and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport as part of the Government’s ongoing review of current gambling legislation. The Premier League is also working with other sports on the development of a new code for responsible gambling sponsorship."

Responding to the news, culture secretary Lucy Frazer tweeted: "While the vast majority of adults enjoy gambling without harm, we can't ignore the fact footballers are massive role models to kids. Our upcoming Gambling White Paper will upgrade punter protections & do more to protect those at risk of addiction."

Newcastle are expected to bank their biggest ever sponsorship agreement ahead of next season after news emerged in November that the deal with Fun88 would end a year early. The £6.5 million-per-year deal bettered the previous agreement with Wonga, but is dwarfed by a host of the club's top-flight rivals.
