Pregnant woman among 11 dead in South Africa house party shooting

  • Eleven people have been killed after three armed gunmen stormed a house party in KwaMakhutha township, near Durban, South Africa, at around 11pm local time on Tuesday.
  • Ten victims, including a woman believed to have been pregnant, died at the scene, while an eleventh victim succumbed to their injuries in hospital after 14 people inside the home were fired upon.
  • The South African Police Service has launched a manhunt for the three male suspects and noted that while the motive of the shooting remains unconfirmed, a feud between rival groupings cannot be ruled out.
  • Authorities disclosed that several of the victims were already known to police in connection with illegal activity, while reports from the scene indicated a white vehicle belonging to a victim was set alight by an attacker.
  • The tragic shooting has left the KwaZulu-Natal province in profound shock and further highlighted concerns over South Africa's murder rate, which experts at the Institute for Security Studies note remains extremely high by international standards.
