Pregnant Marelle Sturrock murdered with hammer weeks after killer partner's band released hammer death song

Killer David Yates murdered Marelle Sturrock with a hammer just weeks after his old band released a song called "Hammer of Justice".

Yates, 36, bludgeoned his pregnant partner, 35, to death at their home in Glasgow, also claiming the life of their unborn son, Jayden.

He then killed himself at Mugdock Country Park north of the city.

One of primary school teacher Marelle's friends posted a screenshot from Facebook of the band Nocturne Wulf announcing the release of Hammer of Justice.

She wrote: "There’s a sickening irony to the name of the single his old band released in 2022 and the circumstances of Marelle’s passing."

The song, which was released in November, is available on Spotify and contains the lyrics, "hammer of justice ends all". Other lines from the song include "I raise up my hammer and I smash in his skull" and "the lives I will take by the will of my hand".

As well as releasing the song as a single, the band brought out £15 t-shirts in support of the track. The T-shirts feature a character wielding a sledgehammer, while the back has the words “hammer of justice ends all” in capital letters.

We previously revealed the Lord of The Rings fanatic had nicknamed Marelle after a tragic JRR Tolkien character. As well as calling their dog Sam, after hobbit Samwise Gamgee from the epic adventure stories, he referred to Marelle as his "Luthien".

Luthien is a female elf mentioned in The Lord of The Rings, and was involved in a double death with her partner.

The names Luthien and Beren also appear on the grave of Tolkien and his wife Edith. In a letter to his son Christopher in 1972, Tolkien requested the inscription and said "she was (and knew she was) my Lúthien. I never called Edith Luthien – but she was the source of the story"

Yates, who often referred to himself as a Hobbit on Facebook, read The Lord of The Rings on a podcast, complete with accents and sound effects, in exchange for listeners donating to charities.

A source said: "It's a shocking and tragic case as it is, but it's made all the more chilling by these little details. He nicknamed her after a character who died in a double death with her partner, and he murdered her then killed himself.

"He attacked her with a hammer just a short time after his band released a song talking about smashing people's skulls in with a hammer of justice. It's just all so bizarre."

Yates killed Marelle just seven weeks before she was due to give birth, before driving to Mugdock Country Park and killing himself.

Her body was found at their home in Jura Street, Glasgow, on Tuesday, April 25, and Police Scotland confirmed officers were not looking for anyone else in connection with her death.

On Thursday, April 27, Yates' body was found in Mugdock Reservoir. Police Scotland confirmed his identity the following day. Last week, the force released a statement on behalf of Marelle's parents, Colin and Lorna Sturrock.

It said: “We are devastated following the deaths of our daughter, Marelle, and soon to be grandson, Jayden Sturrock. Marelle was the happiest person you could ever meet and was always looking to help others the best she could.

"Marelle and her partner doted on each other, and this incident has come as a total shock to all who knew her."
