The preseason is underway, which means that all 32 NFL teams will start trimming down their roster from the 90 players that they were allowed to start with. The first roster cuts are due by 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, as all teams will need to be down to 85 players by then.
The Miami Dolphins currently have 89 players on their roster as of Monday morning. One of the spots will likely be opened up with cornerback Trill Williams moving to injured reserve after he suffered a torn ACL.
These three Dolphins may be sufficient for the remaining cuts that the team needs to make before the deadline.
FB John Lovett
Lovett was signed before Miami brought in Alec Ingold this offseason, so his days have always been numbered, but with Ingold returning from injury, Lovett was going to get opportunities to showcase his talents. With injuries limiting him in practice and keeping him out of the preseason game completely, there’s not much he’s providing for the Dolphins at this point.
C Cole Banwart
Banwart was signed this offseason when undrafted free agent Ty Clary failed his physical, leaving the Dolphins with a need for a third center. In the matchup with the Buccaneers, he played just three snaps, while Adam Pankey actually did more snapping.
With Michael Deiter back in action, and Pankey playing multiple spots on the line, there’s not much need for Banwart anymore.
DB D'Angelo Ross
The Dolphins signed Ross to a reserve/futures contract after the 2021 season that he spent with the New England Patriots. He played significant time in the preseason opener, 68% of the defensive snaps, but the plays that we saw weren’t very positive. He does provide value on special teams and has some versatility to play safety or cornerback, but that might not be enough to keep him around.
