The Doctrine, Without the Distance
Pratityasamutpada is usually translated as "dependent origination", the Buddhist teaching that nothing in existence arises by itself. Every phenomenon, every mental state, every grief, comes into being because of a web of prior conditions, and it passes when those conditions shift. The Samyutta Nikaya states the principle this way: when this is, that is; from the arising of this comes the arising of that. When this is not, that is not. From the cessation of this comes the cessation of that.
