Praise for new Scooby Doo film as main character's sexuality revealed

Praise has poured in for the new Scooby Doo film “Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!” after clips confirm main character Velma is a lesbian.

"Velma" is currently trending on twitter as fans celebrate the diversity and inclusion in the new film. James Gunn, who wrote the original live action films starring Freddie Prinze Jr and Sarah Michelle Geller, retweeted Variety's story about the film confirming Velma's sexuality.

Fans have theorised that Velma was a lesbian after decades of hints in different films and TV shows, but this will be the first openly lesbian relationship for her on-screen. The announcement has been celebrated by Google, who added an animation of lesbian and pride flags falling down the screen if you search the character name.

James Gunn tweeted in 2020 that he “tried” to make Velma a lesbian in the live-action movies. “In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script,” he wrote. “But the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).”

Fans have taken to twitter to celebrate the announcement, with trans activist Katy Montgomerie tweeted a screenshot of the Google animation saying: "Fun Easter Egg if you Google Velma from Scooby-Doo".

Hayley Kiyoko, the actress who played Velma in the 2009 live action adaptation Scooby Doo! The Mystery Begins and the 2010 sequel, tweeted: "I remember booking Velma in 2008. It was my first big role in a movie. I also remember thinking ‘I wonder if they know they hired a lesbian as Velma’ here we are, 14 years later…… love you all so much"

Another fan tweeted a clip from the film and stated "this my fave scene of her"

“Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!” is currently available on Amazon Prime to rent or purchase.
