Portland Radio Station Decides to Begin Playing 'Uplifting' Christmas Music on Election Day: 'Perfect Day to Start'

Christmas came early in Oregon when a radio station reasoned Election Day warranted "uplifting" music, making Tuesday the "perfect day to start" the holiday musical programming.

Portland radio station, 104.1 The Fish, is a Christian music station known by locals as a destination for Christmas music in December and positive Christian music the rest of the year. This year, the station is kicking Christmas off early, on Election Day.

"Christmas is that one time of the year where we come just about as close as you can get to be unified in celebrating the birth of Christ and spending time with family," program director and radio personality Chris Kelly told KGW8. "We thought with all the divisiveness that Election Day generates, that it would be the perfect day to start our Christmas music."

Station staff members hope the early start appeals to new listeners who will tune in after the tumult of Election Day settles.

"Playing Christmas music allows us to reach people who may not ordinarily listen to The Fish," said Sue Wilson, marketing and promotions director. "We invite people to come to the station for the Christmas music, and then stay for the uplifting and positive music, encouraging stories between the songs and the warm and relatable air personalities."
