The community are still coming to terms with his sudden passing, but Roger Casement’s GAC and Geraldine’s Camogie Club in Portglenone will come together to remember Connor Marron with a charity fun run/walk this weekend.
The 19-year-old died in London in early January after travelling with friends to attend the PDC World Darts Championship at the Alexandra Palace.
He’d been tipped to break through on to the Portglenone senior team having featured for the club’s reserve side last season.
A talented snooker player, Connor also won the U16 Northern Ireland Championship when he was 12.
He was a second year student at the Ulster University and was a former pupil of St Louis Grammar School in Ballymena.
On Sunday, his friends, family and clubmates will complete a 5K fun run/walk in his memory in aid of the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust (KBRT).
The charity provided assistance to the Marron family in the days following Connor’s death.
Registration starts at 11am with the run commencing at 12 noon from O’Cahan Park (Gortgole Road, Portglenone) - the home of Roger Casement’s GAC.
Club secretary Martin Kearney said the 5K has been approved by the Parade’s Commission and the Portglenone unit of the Community Rescue Service will also be providing their support.
“As a club we’ve been doing our best to rally around to provide support to his teammates, his family and his friends,” said Mr Kearney.
“We’ve done some work with ALPS (All Lives are Precious) to provide outreach to his peers.
“There has been quite a lot of interest in the fun run/walk from other clubs in South West Antrim and South Derry.
“We’re looking forward to repaying the kindness of the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust.
“The GAA has always been good at providing support to families in their time of need and we’ll continue to do that for Connor’s family.”
Anyone who is unable to attend the fun run on Sunday, but would like to make a donation can do so via the JustGiving site.
