A Port Pirie man who allegedly went to a local sports oval over two nights to steal turf for his own lawn has been arrested.

Police said they received reports of lawn offcuts and a roll of lawn being stolen from the complex on Senate Road.

Police allege the thefts happened over two nights on Sunday, April 10 and Tuesday, April 12.

Investigators were able to identify the suspect after reviewing CCTV footage.

When they went to the man's home they found a large area of freshly laid turf at the property.

The turf was removed and returned to its rightful owner.

The 45-year-old Port Pirie West man was charged with theft and breach of bail.

He was bailed to appear in the Port Pirie Magistrates Court on May 18.
