Jousting is back in Linlithgow for the first time since the pandemic - promising an afternoon of mediaeval horsemanship in the historic West Lothian town.
The event is put on by Historic Environment Scotland and four knights will pick up their lances and joust on the Linlithgow Peel on July 2 and 3.
An area of the peel will be cordoned off to allow for space for the tournament with space for crowds to view the event.
The Jedburgh jousters specialise in horseback stunt shows like jousting, horse trick shows, a western themed show, and even theatre productions from WWI re-enactments to cabaret shows to shows based on ‘Outlander’ and ‘Game of Thrones’.
There will be two jousts during the events day at 12.45pm and 2.30pm - with each joust lasting approximately one hour - the timings are the same on both days.
There will also be a full supporting programme of activity throughout the day where revellers will be able to visit ‘living history camps’ and meet the historic soldiers.
A Historic Environment spokesperson said: “It’s very exciting to see the return of live events. We’ve hosted the jousting on the Linlithgow Peel for over 20 years now, so it’s great to be back. Returning visitors to Linlithgow will get to see some familiar faces, with ‘Sir Checkmate’ returning from Les Amis d’Onno, who have been with us for five years now and are familiar with the set up.
We have full supporting encampments for the event with a calligraphy tent, a mediaeval encampment, a falconer, some modern day activities, and more activities to be announced! Our intention is to make the event exciting - it’s knights on horseback, so that’s pretty dramatic in and of itself, but the knights incorporate stunts into the act to add to the excitement.”
The event takes place from 11.30am to 4.30pm on July 2 and 3.
Tickets should be booked in advance as the event has limited capacity. Members of Historic Environment Scotland will be able to attend for free, however, they still need to reserve tickets in advance.
