Popular Edinburgh coffee shop could open garden café this summer at St Mary's Cathedral

A popular Edinburgh coffee shop is to open a summer pop-up in the gardens of a historic cathedral.

The City of Edinburgh Council validated the proposal for the pop-up café in the grounds of St Mary’s Cathedral at Palmerston Place.

The application was launched in conjunction with St Mary's Cathedral and the nearby Greek-styled Don’t Tell Mamma coffee shop in Tollcross.

They previously opened a pop-up for a short spell last summer in the grounds and it was so popular they decided to go for it again this year, and for the full summer.

The planning application shows that the venture would create four or five new seasonal jobs in the area, for baristas, sales assistants and a manager.

They say that they were given overwhelming support form the local community in the west end last summer and believe the proposal would be popular in the area.

The design statement on the planning application says they will not be cooking on site, but will be offering tasty snacks like ‘brownies, crepes and sandwiches.’

They say: “The café will be operating on a daily basis in tandem with the cathedral’s timing schedule, offering a wide range of drinks and refreshments.

“There will also be light food options like brownies, crepes and sandwiches.

“No on site cooking is proposed.

“The café will be charged with keeping the grounds clean by providing recycling bins and waste bins.

“The café trader operates an existing facility in the city and will extend an existing contract with “Changeworks Recycling” in order to provide recycling and general waste bins for the customers and the café.

"Toilet facilities will be provided within the cathedral which is readily accessible and will be regularly checked and maintained by the employees of the café.”

Don't Tell Mamma recently told Edinburgh Live they were looking forward to opening the pop-up shop again this summer.

Edinburgh Council will make a decision on the planning application in the coming weeks and months.
