Popular Edinburgh cafe to have late-hours knocked back despite huge support

An Edinburgh cafe is set to see their bid for late night hours knocked back despite a huge wave of support from locals.

Passey's cafe and restaurant had submitted a request to the council to increase their opening hours to allow them to close at 12am, however a meeting next week is expected to refuse the application.

Located on Portobello High Street, the eatery is a popular spot in the area, with the owners hoping to change their opening times from 8am-10pm to 8am-12am seven days a week.

First opening in 1998, the restaurant was granted a 10pm closing time in 2021, but said they were concerned neighbouring establishments being able to shut at midnight was having an “adverse” impact on their business.

During the planning process, many locals had shown their support for the plans, with 65 supporting comments submitted in comparison to just four objections.

However, a review from the council’s Development and Management Sub-Committee has now recommended the later hours are refused.

Detailing the reasons for refusal, the review stated that the plans would have an impact on those living nearby.

The report commented: "The proposal is acceptable with regards to Sections 59 and 64 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) (Scotland) Act 1997.

"However, it would have an adverse impact on the amenity of neighbouring residents, contrary to the relevant policy contained within the Edinburgh Local Development Plan."

A final decision is set to be made on Wednesday, January 11.
